Whale Whittling Blank

Inspired by long days at East Point on Saturna Island — watching the water below, waiting for a glimpse of humpback whales passing through the Gulf Islands National Park Reserve. This blank brings that patience and calm to the carving block.

Whittling is a practice that invites focus, offers relaxation, and stimulates your creativity. It's a pastime that brings you closer to nature and gives the carver a deep appreciation for natural material.

The Whale Whittling Blank is designed for beginner to intermediate carvers — shaped to give you a strong starting point and milled from select grain pine for an enjoyable, low-stress carve. Set aside a relaxed weekend afternoon: most carvers get a satisfying result in 3–4 hours.

Please note this item DOES NOT include a carving knife unless you indicate you want one in your selection.

Measurements:

Each Blank: 3.5in × 7in (original size) — finished size will vary depending on how you carve.

Safety First:

  • Carve away from your body, and keep your other hand behind the knife.
  • Ensure your tools are sharp — a dull knife can lead to unintended injuries.
  • Handling knives and other sharp objects should always be done with care.
  • Not recommended for children.

Quick Tips:

  • Start by releasing the figure from the frame. There are four tabs around the perimeter — cut from both sides to free it.
  • Don't work on fine detail until the very end.
  • Focus on the general shape first.
  • Work on rounding the edges in long carves that run along the grain and away from your body.
