Human Whittling Blank

Some carvings are meant to be finished in an afternoon. This one is meant to travel with you.

The Human Figure Whittling Blank is designed for intermediate carvers looking for a more involved project — something to carry on a multi-day hike or a longer trip into the backcountry. Expect to spend a couple of days with it, or a week or more if you want to take your time and go deep on the detail.

Whittling is a practice that invites focus, offers relaxation, and stimulates your creativity. It's a pastime that brings you closer to nature and gives the carver a deep appreciation for natural material.

This blank was designed to be open gender. The form you arrive at is up to you — broaden the shoulders and narrow the hips for a more masculine figure, or widen the hips and taper the shoulders for a feminine one. The carver decides.

There are a few critical cuts and cross-grain details that require good technique and a very sharp knife. That's part of what makes it rewarding.

Please note this item DOES NOT include a carving knife unless you indicate you want one in your selection.

Measurements:

Each Blank: 3.5in × 7in (original size) — finished size will vary depending on how you carve.

Safety First:

  • Carve away from your body, and keep your other hand behind the knife.
  • Ensure your tools are sharp — a dull knife can lead to unintended injuries. This is especially true for the cross-grain cuts on this blank.
  • Handling knives and other sharp objects should always be done with care.
  • Not recommended for children.

Quick Tips:

  • Start by releasing the figure from the frame. There are four tabs around the perimeter — cut from both sides to free it.
  • Don't work on fine detail until the very end.
  • Focus on the general shape and overall silhouette first — commit to your gender expression early by establishing the shoulder and hip taper before moving on.
  • Work on rounding the edges in long carves that run along the grain and away from your body.
  • Save the cross-grain detail cuts for last, and make sure your knife is freshly stropped before you start them.
